Goodbye Coach, And Welcome Coach!!
Hull Hornets
Hornets Announce New Head Coach Appointment.

Hornets former Head Coach, Ben Grant, recently commented on his decission to step down as Head Coach:
“Having recently increased my work commitments and with family life becoming more and more busy, it is with a heavy heart and sadness that I announce my decision to step down as Head Coach of the Hull Hornets, American Football Club, this is with immediate effect. As you will imagine this is not a decision taken lightly, but as most of you will have become aware my family and work commitments are making it increasingly difficult to attend training on a regular basis. This is therefore not allowing me to give of my best to the Hornets or to my family.”

He continued: “In the meantime, I am very pleased to announce that Coach Graham McCoid, is stepping up and taking over the guiding reins. I shall still be around and available as a player, so am not giving up my involvement with Gridiron.
Consequently I expect everyone to show our new Head Coach Graham McCoid the same respect you gave me and which made it easier to do the thankless task that is Head Coach.”

"The Hull Hornets Committee wish to take this opportunity to wish Ben, a massive vote of thanks for the work and time he has put into the Hornets during his years as a player and as a coach. Ben was one of the first players to join the club and we know this decision as been a tough one to make. We are very happy he as decided to stay on as a player and as such his inspiration and commitment will still be a part of the Hornets never say die attitude.

We are also pleased to announce the appointment of new Head Coach Graham McCoid, who recently said: “I wish to publicly thank Coach Grant, for his long involvement with the Hornets and for his input as Head Coach. Ben stepped up after the departure of former Head Coach Peter Scorah who moved on to other avenues. Bens input was instrumental in continuing the Hornets traditions and for that we are grateful. We understand his commitment to his family and are pleased to learn of his continued involvement as a player within the squad.”

Lancashire Wolverines 30 @ Hull Hornets 0
A somewhat depleted squad of Hull Hornets, due to last weeks’ injuries, and the failure of the leagues registration system, today faced their red rose based opponents, the Lancashire Wolverines, in a battle of pride and honour.
Pride in the game shirt they wore and honour in showing last week’s result was an anomaly.

The Hornets defence held the Wolverines on the first series of plays, but succumbed on the Wolverines second drive to go 7 points down.
The Hornets tried valiantly to move the ball but where held by the Wolverines more experienced squad, once they reached the red zone. Although the ‘O’ line held their ground much better this week, giving rookie QB, Liam Kilvington time to get the ball out.

The Hornets defence was boosted by the return of Martin ‘Diesel’ Gardham, who made several crunching momentum halting tackles, and also many players who making up for their injured comrades played both ways.

The end of the first half of play, and the Hornets went into the changing rooms down by 21 - 0.

The Hornets held the increasingly frustrated Wolverines in the 3rd quarter to scoring no points but lost out in the 4th as the wolverines added 7 and a safety for 2 points to finish the fixture 30 – 0 in their favour.

The Hornets returned a little self-belief and pride back to their performance after their loss to Manchester the week before.

Offensive co-ordinator Gavin Rushton made special comments regarding the Offensive line who created gaps in the Wolverines Defensive line, which allowed the Hornets Running Backs, Ben Grant, Craig Bennett and others to make some punishing runs at times.

Hornets Head Coach, Ben Grant commented: “after last week’s loss to the Titans, every one as given 100% commitment, even though we only had a single training session before this game. Our rookies have really stepped up to the mark and are making a positive contribution, both to on field events and off field morale.”
He continued: “We should all remember, at the end of last season we lost several key players and this season would be one of re-building the squad and the club.”
When asked about the next game against the Manchester Titans away, he remarked: “undoubtedly this result will go some way to rebuilding team confidence, and we now have three sessions at training camp to prepare for this fixture. This hopefully will give the offence time to gel together, and perfect their game day performance, and allow injured players chance to re-cooperate.”

The Hull Hornets travel to Manchester on Sunday, 6 June, to face the Manchester Titans.

Hornets prepare for Wolverines...
In an effort to put last weeks loss behind them the Hornets have concentrated their traiing this week to take on the Wolverines more effectively...

This Sunday will see the Hornets facing another, red rose based squad, in the Lancashire Wolverines.
This fixture will be held at the Hornets new home ground of Brantingham Park, Elloughton, with a 2:30pm Kick Off, and all are welcome...

Manchester Titans 72 @ Hull Hornets 0
The mighty Manchester Titans came to Brantingham Park, and handed out a lesson to the Hull Hornets as they simply outplayed, and outscored a poor looking and unprepared Hornets squad, taking top spot in BAFA Division 2 Central, and dropping the Hornets 2nd bottom, in the process. Shattered by lack of game ready players the Hornets cobbled together a squad that would mean many were playing both sides of the ball, and out of position.
The game commenced from the off with the Titans returning the ball to pay dirt on their first possession, the second time in two games this has happened to the Hornets... Proving they are slow to get their game heads on, and mount an effective defence of their goal line from the off.
As the Titans lead continued to become unasailable the Hornets did supply some bright moments with Rookie QB, Liam Kilvington, moving the ball effectively and regular QB/RB Gaz Hughes showing some moments of his usual flair, on occasions. All to no avail as the Hornets go down 72 – 0 against the divisions high flying Manchester Titans

Hornets prepare for clash with Titans.
Sunday, 16 May, 2010, is the date the Hull Hornets begin their home fixtures with a trip to Brantingham Park, Elloughton, by the Manchester Titans.

The Hornets will be hoping to reverse their opening day 13 – 6 defeat suffered, against Staffordshire Surge. Mean while the Titans who played against the Lancashire Wolverines last weekend, will be raring to go. The Hornets have used the time between these two league fixtures to prepare for the coming clash.

Hornets Head Coach, Ben Grant, commented: ‘we are prepared both mentally and physically for this upcoming fixture, having said that, we do not under estimate the Titans’.

He continued:’ we have come a long way in a short time and our rookies have stepped up their performance. This Sundays fixture will be our hardest yet of the season. Manchester is a renowned all round squad, both in the air and on the ground. Now is the time for our full squad to perform and get us our first win of the season’.

This is an ideal opportunity for those who enjoy this fast paced, hard hitting sport to see what all the excitement is all about’. This fixture is free to attend and all are welcome, and is being played at the Hull Ionians ground Brantingham Park, Brantingham Road, Elloughton, with Kick off at 2.30pm.

Beaten NOT Defeated
The 2010 British American Football season started in earnest on Sunday, with a road trip to Stoke for the Hull Hornets, to face in competitive football, for the first of their two competitive meetings this year, to play the Staffordshire Surge. Never having met in a regular season game the Surge were something of a unknown quantity, although their quarterback Richard Large, is known throughout the league for his many years service to football and is more than a challenge for any defence in the country.Wining the coin toss, the Surge opted to receive the ball. Taking over on their own 35 yard line, they caught the Hornets defence sleeping with a run 44 yards into the pay-dirt and take a 6—0 lead over the Hornets, with their first play of the game. Failing to place the ball between the sticks on the points after attempt, the Surge kicked to the Hornets, giving Hull’s QB Gaz Hughes, a chance to exact revenge for the opening score. The Hornets were proving rusty on their opening drive as this failed to gain any major yardage and the ball was kicked away, giving the Surge chance to move the ball against Hull’s defence, once again. This time the Hornets were waking up and put in several crunching tackles to halt firmly and squarely any forward movement by the Staffordshire based footballers. The first quarter of this fixture continued to rock backwards and forwards with both teams putting in strong drives down field but upon reaching the red zone of their opponents the drives would stumble and fail.End of 1st quarter: Hull Hornets 0 @ Staffordshire Surge 6The teams changed ends for the start of the second quarter, but this continued in the same manner as the previous fifteen minutes of football, with neither team managing to score, or to take advantage of red zone opportunities. The Hornets defence began to exert pressure on the Surge offensive line. With many tackles by Hull’s rookie, players. Notable was the crunching joint tackle made by Hornets Coach Ben Grant, and NT Marc ’ZZ’ Burdall. Effectively removing the Surge’s 20 year veteran QB Richard Large who retired with a groin injury, and opening up the game to a possible victory for the East Yorkshire based outfit. Shortly before his replacement Surge QB Richard Large was instrumental in stretching the home teams lead to 13 points to 0, with a re-run of the scoring play from the first quarter, this time the extra point attempt was good. After his removal the Surge suffered and the Hornets began to wrench control of the game away from their opponents. Driving down to the Surge end-zone, on several occasions. Still though unable to gain the points they so rightly deserved. At the half the Hornets were ready to assert their authority, something they intended to do in the 2nd half of the game. Half time: Hull Hornets 0 @ Staffordshire Surge 13The Hornets came into the third period of play with a renewed vigour and determination to halt the Surge in their tracks, with a solid defensive performance from Ben Grant, Kris Edge, who was one of the leagues leading tacklers on the day with 11 tackles, helping the Hornets to stem the tide. Hull’s Gaz Hughes making the play of the day for the Hornets with a fine interception and 20 yard return to pay dirt. The extra point attempt failed. On many occasions the Hornets defence intercepted the ball which was then effectively returned to the Surge red-zone but the Hornets attempts at gaining more points floundered. End of the 3rd quarter: Hull Hornets 6 @ Staffordshire Surge 13The fourth quarter of regulation play time came and the Hornets now had the upper hand and the determination to succeed and start the season with a 1 in the win column, but time after time the Surge defence held its ground and with the clock rapidly turning against them the Staffordshire Surge regained possession of the football, leaving the Hornets with no chance of claiming the win they had worked so hard for. Notable players for the Hornets on the day were:Tom Townend with 10 tackles and a sack. Rookie Tom Radford was Defensive MVP with 8 tackles for a top performance on his gridiron debut. He was thrown in at the deep end and really stepped up.
Gaz Hughes scored with his 20 yard interception return, which also earned him the offensive MVP on the day. After the game Hornets head coach, Ben Grant commented that the performance was one in that all members of the playing squad could be proud of.
Hulls defensive co-ordinator Martin ‘Diesel’ Gardham was more prosaic in his comments “To paraphrase Mr Churchill though we shouldn't give this defeat the status of a victory. Seasons aren't won by evacuations “. Not the white wash many had predicted but perhaps a moral victory. But moral victories don’t add a 1 in the win column. The Hornets next fixture is a home game, versus the Manchester Titans, on Sunday 16 May, at our new home ground venue of Brantingham Park Elloughton with a 2.30pm kick off.
