F.A.Q's
CAN I JUST TURN UP?
Due to restrictions on the numbers that can train (due to safety reasons) you may find out that the class is full with existing members. This doesn't happen often but be aware you may spend the first week just watching the class. It's best if you contact us first (by e-mail or text) and we can advise you of the situation. When you do come down wear loose clothing, bring water and a towel (plus a change of t-shirt if you have to travel any distance). We will provide the equipment you need.
WHAT ARE THE TRAINING FEES?
There is no contract to sign. Students pay either weekly, £4 for seniors (16 and over) or £2.50 for juniors. If preferred you can block book four consecutive sessions for £12 (Seniors) or £8 (Juniors). In addition there is a discount for members training at both clubs.
DO I NEED A MEMBERSHIP?
All students training with East Riding Thai Boxing must be insured through the club to cover against injuries incurred whilst training. However this insurance is only valid if you are training with another insured student. For this reason you will not be allowed to train if you fail to pay for your insurance / membership fee when it becomes due for renewal.
All new students are covered for four lessons under the instructors insurance to give you time to decide if the sport is for you. The student must then decide if they are going to train for fitness only (Thai Pad Circuit associate members) or study the full Thai syllabus (East Riding Thai Boxing members). Associate members pay £5 per year and Full members pay £15.
DO I HAVE TO ATTEND EVERY WEEK?
Students are expected to train on a regular basis. If you have any problems attending please discuss with your coach.
If you fail to attend the class for 6 consecutive weeks you automatically forfeit your membership. If you wish to resume your training you will need to reapply for membership. Associate members training on the pad circuit are free to attend as little or often as they wish, but the benefits you get from your training will reflect this.
DOES THE CLUB DO GRADINGS?
To maintain standards and allow us to plan training appropriate to the abilities of our students all Full members must undergo regular grading sessions. For Junior grades (White to Blue 1) these take place every four months. For Senior grades (Brown through to Red) these are held every six months. Whilst it is not essential that you take your grade every time it is not acceptable to miss gradings on a regular basis.
WHAT UNIFORM AND EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
All Full members need to acquire the club training uniform of shorts and T-shirt by the time of their first grading. In addition, for their safety, they also must obtain Shinguards, groin guard, gum shield, hand wraps and boxing gloves. Additional equipment such as anklets and a skipping rope is also recommended.
For the pad circuit the club will provide all the equipment you need but personally I would prefer to wear my own gloves if I was training rather than share, wouldn't you?
WHAT OTHER SAFETY MEASURES ARE THERE?
Students should remove all jewellery before training. Only one plain wedding band is allowed if covered by a plaster or glove. Earrings and necklaces can be ripped off (or out) during training. Bracelets can cause injury to your partners when punching.
It is also essential to ensure your nails are kept short to avoid cutting or grazing your partners during training.
In any physical activity sweat is inevitable (if your not sweating you aren’t training hard enough) but there is no excuse for poor hygiene. Training equipment should be washed regularly and gloves allowed to fully dry out before being packed away.
All the equipment provided by the club is inspected weekly as are the facilities we use. If you have any concerns related to safety please raise these with the coach at your training session.

Guidelines for choosing a club
1) Is the Instructor insured to teach (Public Liability and Professional Indemnity)?
2) Is the club accredited by the local authority, a member of a National Governing Body or both?
3) Does the Instructor have a coaching qualification in addition to his technical qualification (Black Belt etc.)?
4) Is there a qualified First Aider at all sessions and does the club have a set procedure for dealing with emergencies (including means of contacting the emergency services)?
5) If the club coaches juniors (under 16) is there a set Child Protection Policy and a designated Child Protection Officer? Are all club officials Enhanced CRB checked and are their certificates up to date?
6) Can the club access additional support, provide opportunities to train and compete? Is the instructor willing to introduce you to other clubs or instructors that can help your learning?
7) Does the club offer a trial period (normally 4 weeks) before you have to commit yourself to a membership, insurance, buying equipment and uniform? Beware high pressure sales techniques and commitments involving standing order payments etc.
